Google Business Profile: the 30-minute fix most advisors skip
Categories, services, posts and reviews. The Local Pack changes that show up within weeks, not months.
When someone searches “financial advisor” in your city, the first thing they see isn’t a list of websites. It’s a map with three businesses under it. That’s the Local Pack, and which three practices appear there’s decided largely by Google Business Profile, not by your website.
Most advisors have a profile. Most set it up years ago, claimed it, and never touched it again. Here’s the half hour that changes that.
1. Fix your primary category
“Financial planner,” “Financial consultant,” “Investment service,” “Insurance agency.” Pick the one that matches the searches you most want to win, then add the others as secondary categories. Getting the primary category wrong is the single most common reason a good practice doesn’t appear in the pack.
2. Fill in the services
Google lets you list specific services with descriptions. Retirement income planning. Business succession planning. Insurance review. Financial planning for physicians. Each one is another way to match a search.
3. Write the description for a client, not a compliance officer
You’ve 750 characters. Say who you help, where you’re, and what someone can expect from a first meeting. Include your city. Skip the credentials paragraph; there’s a separate field for that.
4. Post something
Profiles with recent posts are treated as active. A short note about a seminar, a seasonal planning reminder or a new article on your site is enough. Once a month keeps the profile alive.
5. Ask for reviews, properly
Reviews are the strongest local ranking signal you control, and the one advisors are most nervous about. Check your dealer’s policy on client reviews and testimonials first. Where reviews are permitted, ask satisfied clients directly, with a link, at the moment they thank you. Respond to every review, briefly and without discussing anything personal.
Local Pack changes from these five steps typically show within weeks. It’s the fastest-moving part of SEO for an advisor.
Three mistakes we fix most often
- The wrong address, or none. Advisors who meet clients at home or by video often hide the address, which is fine, but then also leave the service area blank. Set the service area to the cities you actually serve or the profile will struggle to appear anywhere.
- Duplicate profiles. An old listing from a previous office or a dealer-created profile competing with your own. Google splits the signals between them and both suffer. Merge or remove the extra.
- Inconsistent name. “Jane Smith, CFP” on the profile, “Smith Wealth Management” on the website, “Jane Smith Financial” on LinkedIn. Pick one and use it everywhere.
Photos, hours and the small things
Add a real photo of yourself and your office. Profiles with photos get noticeably more clicks, and prospects want to see who they would be meeting. Set accurate hours, including whether you take evening or weekend appointments, because “open now” is a filter people use. Add your booking link if you’ve one. Turn on messaging only if you’ll answer it within a day; an unanswered message is worse than no option at all.
For firms with more than one advisor or office
Each office should have its own profile with its own address, hours and photos, all under one verified business group so they can be managed together. Individual advisors within a firm generally shouldn’t have separate profiles at the same address; Google treats these as duplicates and the firm’s listing suffers. The exception is advisors who operate as distinct practices under a dealer brand, where a practitioner listing is appropriate. If you’re unsure which applies, the safest test is whether a client would search for the person or for the firm. Set up the profile for whichever they would type.
What to expect after you fix it
Local Pack changes are the fastest-moving part of search for an advisor. Category and service changes are usually reflected within days. Review velocity shows up within weeks. A profile that was invisible for “financial planner” in a mid-sized city can appear in the pack within a month or two of the fixes above, particularly if the website behind it’s in reasonable shape. That’s far quicker than organic rankings, which is why we do this work in the first month of every search plan.
The one thing that doesn’t move quickly is reviews. Building from three reviews to thirty takes a steady, compliant process over a year, not a campaign. Start now, ask consistently, and the profile keeps getting stronger long after the thirty minutes are up.
A note on compliance
Everything on your profile is public marketing and should meet the same standard as your website: educational, no performance claims, no promises. Check your dealer’s guidance on reviews and testimonials before you ask for any, and never respond to a review with anything about a client’s situation. Within those rules, a complete, active profile is one of the lowest-risk, highest-return things an advisor can do online.
How this connects to everything else
Google Business Profile doesn’t work in isolation. Reviews on your profile are one of the trust signals AI tools weigh when deciding who to recommend. The categories and services you choose should match the pages on your website. Posts on the profile can point to your latest article or seminar, giving each of those a small local boost. Done properly, half an hour here lifts the rest of your search presence with it.
Google Business Profile optimization is included in every one of our search plans. If you’d rather do it yourself, the list above is the whole job.
